Rotterdam is located within the South Holland province of the Netherlands. It is the country’s second biggest city, with approximately 610,000 residents and boasts Europe’s largest sea port. It is located by the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas channel which leads into a vast waterway, often referred to as the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta, then upstream into the central European hinterland.

Rotterdam’s first settlement appeared in 900 CE. The area suffered from massive floods until preventative dikes, dams and canals were built around 1260, and a shipping canal was created in 1350. This led to the port of Rotterdam becoming a major trans-shipment centre. One of the world’s first multinational shipping merchants known as the Dutch East India Company was founded in 1602, and was based at the port of Rotterdam.

Rotterdam is divided into a northern and a southern area by the Nieuwe Maas River. The two sections are connected by bridges, subways and railway tunnels. The city centre is called Centrum and is situated on the northern banks of the Nieuwe Maas. There are 14 districts surrounding Centrum’s city centre. These districts originally merged out of the many towns within the area. In the 1990’s, the Kop van Zuid business centre was built on the south bank. However, in general, the large hotels, first-class restaurants and designer shops are located downtown, closer to Central station, Hofplein Square and City Hall, an area often referred to as the cool district.
