Located in the southern Caribbean Sea, the island of Curacao is a constituent country of the kingdom of the Netherlands. To the north of Curacao is the Venezuelan coast and Aruba lies to the east. Willemstad was the capital city for all of the Netherlands Antilles and the whole Caribbean region until the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010. Today, Willemstad remains Curacao’s capital and has a population of approximately 150,000 citizens.

Willemstad’s historical centre is made up of two quarters, Otrobanda and Punda. They are divided by an inlet called St. Anna Bay, which flows into the city’s natural harbour, known as Schottegat. The Dutch seized Curacao from the Spanish in 1634. The newer area of the city is called Otrobanda and was founded in 1707. The name Otrobanda derives from the local phrase saying “otro Banda” which translation means “the other side”. The area is often referred to as Willemstad’s cultural centre. The Schottegat natural harbour became an important shipping port due to its considerable depth and close approximation to Venezuela’s oil fields, and is still one of the biggest oil handling ports in the Caribbean. Tourism brings considerable revenues to the country’s economy. Visitors are attracted by the colonial architecture, especially the ancient Snoga synagogue. Constructed in 1692, it is the oldest building of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. The Snoga Synagogue underwent extensive reconstruction in 1732. The island’s tropical climate, beautiful sandy beaches and coral reefs also tempt people to travel to Willemstad.
