Bolton Wanderers vs Leeds United - Championship preview and odds

August 06 , 2016 16:30pm - Macron Stadium

Championship

Having bounced straight back into the second tier, Bolton Wanderers will kick off their new campaign with a tough match against promotion hopefuls Leeds United.

There were fears that Bolton would struggle to haul themselves out of the third tier but boss Phil Parkinson pulled off what seemed like a miracle by leading them to automatic promotion at the first attempt. All this while the club remained under an EFL-imposed transfer embargo.

Whether Parkinson can continue to defy the odds on a shoestring budget remains to be seen but his side is going up against a club that missed out on promotion by just one place last season. What`s more, their pre-season campaign has not gone well, with no wins and just a single goal scored in their last four games. That run including a 0-0 draw against non-league Fylde.

With Garry Monk now departed for Middlesbrough, Leeds fans will be hoping that new boss Thomas Christiansen can continue where he left off by challenging for promotion once again. The former Barcelona player has limited managerial experience but did lead APOEL FC to the last 16 of the Europa League for the first time in their history. He also led the club to a league title in his time there.

He has previously worked under Johan Cruyff and was called up to the Spanish nationsl team while still playing for Barcelona`s B Team.

The Yorkshire side still look strong having retained much of their squad from last season including Championship top scorer Chris Wood. Their only defeat in pre-season came away from home at La Liga side Eibar.

Betting odds and tips

Bolton have home advantage but Leeds have looked much better in pre-season and their squad is also superior. With that in mind, the away win looks good value at 13/8.
