Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Newcastle United - Premier League Preview and Odds

February 11, 2019 20:00pm - Molineux

Premier League

Wolverhampton Wanderers can further cement their status as the Premier League`s best-of-the-rest with a win over relegation-threatened Newcastle United on Monday night.

A win for Wolves would put them on 41 points, four ahead of eighth-ranked Watford and nine behind sixth-ranked Chelsea. A seventh-place finish would be a remarkable achievement for a newly-promoted team and would put Nuno Espirito Santo in contention for the manager of the season award.

The club were the eighth biggest spenders in the summer, but were starting from scratch compared to teams with established Premier League squads. What`s more, they spent less that Fulham, Leicester City, West Ham United and Everton and just a little more than Brighton and Hove Albion. In this context, their achievements have been remarkable.

Next up for the over-achievers is a home clash against the team that had the lowest net spend in the summer (-£28.7m). Wolves have won their last three Premier League home matches in a row and their last two on home soil. However, their overall home form has been mixed with defeats to Watford, Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace among their five losses.

Their last three matches have yielded 10 goals with four conceded, so they will hope to carry that scoring form into this game.

Meanwhile, low-spending Newcastle United will hope to bounce back from the disappointment of last week`s 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. The Magpies looked on course to pick up a valuable point when Son Heung-Min bagged a late winner for the home side. That ended a run of two-straight wins for Rafa Benitez`s men.

Only goal difference is keeping the northeast club out of the bottom three, but barring a heavy defeat on Monday night, they have enough of a cushion to avoid slipping into the danger zone. On the other hand, a win could lift them as high as 14th.

Benitez`s men have won just twice on the road this term, but have played out five draws and their only defeats have come against top six opposition.

Betting odds and tips

Wolves have lost more games at home than they have away, so a win is by no means certain here. This, combined with Newcastle`s ability to avoid defeat to teams outside of the top six away from home makes the draw look like a decent proposition.

You can back the Draw at 5/2.
