Sunderland vs Burnley - Premier League preview and odds

March 18, 2017 15:00 pm - Stadium of Light

Premier League

Bottom of the pile Sunderland will test their mettle against a Burnley side with the worst away form in the league when the two teams meet at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Sunderland looking for another great escape

Once again, Sunderland find themselves heading into the run-in needing an odds-defying run of form to avoid the drop. Whether David Moyes will be the right man to engineer such a great escape remains to be seen but a win over the Premier League`s worst travellers would certainly give them a boost and keep them within touch of their rivals.

The Black Cats are winless in their last five at home, having drawn two and lost three including their last two in a row. What`s more, they have failed to score in any of their last three matches at the Stadium of Light.

Moyes` men have conceded at least one goal in 79% of their home matches and have conceded the opening goal in 74% of their matches overall.

Meanwhile, Burnley will see this game as the perfect opportunity to break their hoodoo away from home this season. Despite sitting in a respectable 12th place in the table in the first season since their return to the top flight, the Clarets are without a win on the road and have picked up just two points on their travels all season.

On a positive note, Sean Dyche`s men have scored at least one goal in each of their last 12 matches. However, they have also conceded at least one goal in all but one of their away matches. Their last away win in the Premier League came at Aston Villa back in 2015.

Team news

The home side have been plagued by injuries all season and that situation shows no sign of abating with Darron Gibson (knee), Victor Anichebe (knee), Duncan Watmore (ACL), Paddy McNair (knee) and Lee Cattermole (hip) all crocked, while Steven Pienaar (calf strain) and Jan Kirchhoff (cartilage) remain doubtful.

The visitors are not without their own problems with Johann Gudmundsson (knee), Dean Marney (ACL) and Kevin Long (knee surgery) all still out while key man Steven Defour (thigh) is a doubt.

Sunderland have pulled of miracles before but this season they look like a side resigned to their fate. This could be the perfect opportunity for Burnley to bag their first away win of the season.
