Ascot Stakes - Royal Ascot 2017

June 20, 2016 17:00pm - Ascot, Berkshire

Royal Ascot 2017

Category: Handicap, Class 2

Distance: 2m 3f 210y

Going: Good to firm

Runners: 19

Winner: £49,800.00

The last seven winners of this Handicap race have all emerged from the National Hunt scene and this year`s renewal is likely to produce a similar outcome.

Beyond Conceit is expected to go well here, coming from a stable that have a good record at this festival. The Nicky Henderson-trained horse is competing off a good mark and the going should not be a problem. Last time out, he came in second to The World`s End at Aintree (Grade 1) and has been training for this ever since. A previous course win also puts another tick in a box on his checklist.

Who Dares Wins impressed during his Coral Cup win at Cheltenham, and was promptly promoted to favourite for the Chester Cup after a flurry of backing. However, despite running well, he appeared to be hindered at a crucial stage and could only manage fourth in that particular race. That should not put off punters who believe he can improve further with a better run over the longer trip.

He is one of three horses entered by Alan King of which Cartwright can also be considered a contender. With a run of five wins from his last six starts, this progressive horse certainly has a chance, although there are still questions marks hanging over his temperament and consistency. As a result, he is available at a huge 25/1.

Betting odds and tips

There is little to separate the two front runners but Beyond Conceit just gets the nod ahead of Who Dares Wins. Meanwhile, Cartwright is the standout pick in the each way market.
