Commonwealth Cup - Royal Ascot 2017

June 23, 2016 15:40pm - Ascot, Berkshire

Royal Ascot 2017

Category: Group 1, Class 1

Distance: 6f

Going: Good to firm

Runners: 12

Winner: £ 226,840.00

The Commonwealth Cup is a Group 1 race open to horses aged three years. It is run over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres). The race was first introduced to the Royal Ascot in 2015 as part of an overhaul of the European sprint race programme and replaced the Buckingham Palace Stakes.

Caravaggio will be the one to beat here and will likely head off as odds on favourite. The stable are making all the right noises and punters are weighing in on the colt. It won`t be all plain sailing however as this renewal features some seriously talented horses.

So who can match the speed of the Tipperary-based colt? For many punters, Harry Angel is the most likely challenger having also shown some impressive pace in recent outings including the Sandy Lane Stakes where he smashed the course record, beating Second Thought and Mubtasim in the process. The Cox yard certainly feel that he is up to the task and will be happy with the central draw. With these two in the line-up, this could be a sprint to remember.

Blue Point`s form should not be ignored either. A Group 3 winner last time ahead of a horse that has since enjoyed Group 2 success. He likes a fast race and his yard are in fine form, so expect him to be right in the mix.

Betting odds and tips

Harry Angel is attracting a lot of attention and plenty of tipsters have decided to plump for the Adam Kirby mount. However, Caravaggio`s credentials are too good to ignore and he has a taste for victory that will be hard to supress again here.

You can back Caravaggio at a price of 10/11 with Bet365, while Harry Angel is available at 10/3 with the same bookmaker.

Remember, Bet365 are offering guaranteed best odds on all Royal Ascot races and a 100% deposit bonus up to £200 for new accounts.
