Champions League Final preview and odds: Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid

May 28, 2016 20:45pm - Stadio San Siro

Champions League Final

This year`s Champions League trophy will be heading to Madrid, but will it be Real or Atletico who will be packing an extra piece of luggage after Saturday night`s final showdown in Milan?

Real face rivals for second time in three years

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will meet in the final of Europe`s elite club competition for the second time in three years in what promises to be a fascinating clash on Saturday night. Los Blancos will be aiming for title number 11, while their arch rivals will be trying to put their hands on the coveted trophy for the very first time.

Zinedine Zidane`s men pipped their rivals to second place in the league after completing their league campaign with a sequence of 12-straight wins. In fact, their only league defeat in 2012 came at the hands of their rivals when the teams met at the Bernabeu in February (0-1). In their Champions League campaign, their one and only defeat was a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Wolfsburg at the quarter-final stage.

This will be Real Madrid`s 14th European Cup final, having already won 10 and lost three. Their last defeat came against Liverpool in 1981 - since then, they have won all three of the finals they have contested.

Atletico keen to avenge 2014 defeat

Atletico Madrid were just seconds away from the lifting this trophy back in 2014 when a Sergio Ramos equaliser late into injury time took the game to extra time. From that moment on, the game ran away from Diego Simeone`s men, who were eventually beaten by a 4-1 score-line.

Los Colchoneros had to beat Barcelona and Bayern Munich to book their place in this year`s edition of UEFA`s showpiece event, and will be full of confidence after remaining unbeaten against Real Madrid in the league this term (W1 D1). However, they did lose three matches on their way to the final after falling to Benfica at home and Barcelona and Bayern Munich away - all by 2-1 scorelines.

Betting odds and tips

Real Madrid have a good record in European Cup finals but they were just seconds away from losing to Atleti two years ago and failed to beat their opponents in the league this year. In fact, they have only beaten their rivals once in their last 10 meetings.

The last four matches have all been tight with two draws (0-0 & 1-1) and two narrow wins (1-0) for Atletico. Another close game can be expected on Saturday and extra-time looks very likely.
