Liverpool vs. Newcastle United - Premier League Preview and Odds

March 03, 2018 17:30pm - Anfield

Premier League

In-form Liverpool will be hoping to give ex-manager Rafa Benitez a tough time when they host 15th-ranked Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday evening.

The Reds come into this fixture in blistering form having lost just one of their last 19 Premier League fixtures. Last time out, they fired four past West Ham United and prior to that they thumped Porto 5-0 in their own backyard in the last 16 of the Champions League. On home soil, they are unbeaten since last April and have scored 17 goals in their last five matches including four against league leaders Manchester City. On the flip side, Jurgen Klopp`s men have not kept a clean sheet in four home games.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are still hovering precariously above the drop zone with just a two-point gap separating them and 18th-ranked Swansea. However, they have lost just one of their last eight matches in the Premier League having drawn five and won the other two. That kind of form should be enough to keep them up but they will not be fancied to come away with anything here - after all, their last win at Anfield came way back in 1994.

When the two teams met at St. James` Park back in October, the match ended 1-1 and another draw would suit the Magpies again this time. They also managed to come back from two goals down to snatch a point on Benitez`s last visit two seasons ago.

Betting odds and tips

Liverpool will offer a warm welcome to the man that led them to their fifth Champions League crown but that`s where the niceties will end. The Reds have their eye on second place in the league and will be looking forward to wrapping up their Champions League Round of 16 match next week with another three points.

The Geordies are in a relegation battle bvut this might be one game where their fighting spirit might not be enough to overcome the formidable quality of the opposition. A home win can be expected and the over 3.5 goals bet has paid out in four of the RedsÂ’ last five home games making that combination rather tempting with prices in the region of 13/10 to be expected.

Back the Home win/Over 3.5 Goals.
