Premier League preview and odds: Liverpool vs Sunderland

February 6, 2016 15:00pm - Anfield

Premier League

Liverpool have won just one of their last five Premier League matches and appear to be out of the running for a top four place. Can they pick themselves up in time for Saturday`s clash with relegation-battlers Sunderland?

Just one win in five for Reds

Liverpool have not had a great season by any means. A poor start followed by a managerial change and a raft of injuries has left the 18-time league champions isolated in mid-table mediocracy. The Reds may now have to bank on winning the League Cup or the Europa League to secure European football next season.

In their last game, the Reds once again dominated possession but lacked any cutting edge in the final third, as they were undone on the counter-attack away to Leicester City. Prior to that, they come out on top in a 5-4 thriller away to Norwich City.

In their last home game, they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by arch-rivals Manchester United, in a game that they once again dominated while lacking the finishing touch.

Safety still out of arms reach for Sunderland

Sunderland have won just two of their last 10 league games and are still four points adrift of safety in 19th place. The Black Cats have spent most of the season in the drop zone, and have showed little sign of having the quality required to claw their way out. However, a win against the odds away to Liverpool would give them a massive boost going into the final third of the campaign.

Last time out, Sam Allardyce`s men were beaten 0-1 at home by title favourites Manchester City. Prior to that, they were held 1-1 by Bournemouth, also on home soil.

The Black Cats managed to score in each of their last seven away games but only ran out winners on two occasions (Swansea and Crystal Palace).

Team news

The home side will be without Divock Origi, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Sturrdige, Danny Ings and Joe Gomez, while Philippe Coutinho is still a doubt.

Meanwhile, the visitors will have to make do without Younes Kaboul, Adam Matthews and Seb Larsson.
