Southampton still have an outside chance of grabbing a European qualification spot, while visitors Sunderland will be trying to keep their heads above the relegation tide, when the two teams meet at St. Marys in the Premier League this weekend.
Yo-yo season for Saints
It has been an up and down season for Southampton so far, with impressive unbeaten runs immediately followed by frustrating winless spells. As a result, they currently sit in mid-table with a total of 40 points on the board. A recent unbeaten run of six games was broken by back-to-back defeats at home to Chelsea (1-2) and away to AFC Bournemouth (2-0).
Ronald Koeman`s men will need to get back to winning ways if they are to remain in the hunt for European places. They will surely fancy their chances against one of the league`s bottom-four teams.
Sunderland out of danger zone
A run of nine games in which they have picked up 12 points has helped Sunderland to finally emerge from the relegation mire. The Black Cats may only be out of the drop zone on goal difference, but it is a sign that they are heading in the right direction after all appeared to be lost at Christmas.
Sam Allardyce`s men have lost 10 of their 14 away games this season, having picked up just eight of their 24 points on the road.
