Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Garbine Muguruza - Wimbledon Quarter-finals preview and odds

Published on: 11/07/2017

Muguruza was a finalist here two years ago when she was defeated in straight sets by Serena Williams. Her form on grass since then has been patchy to say the least with a semi-final appearance in Birmingham last month her best showing. However, the former World No. 2 seems to be finding her way again and showed some real fight when coming from behind to defeat Angelique Kerber in Monday`s showdown on Court No. 2 - a result that should knock the German of the World No. 1 spot.

That match saw her take the initiative in the last two sets instead of waiting for the points come to her, and it was perhaps her most aggressive performance of the year to date - something that bodes well for the rest of this tournament. She holds a 3-1 record over Kuznetsova, although the two have yet to meet on grass.

Kuznetsova is playing in a Wimbledon quarter-final for the first time in nine years having previously reached the same stage in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Of her 17 singles titles, only one came on grass and that was at Eastbourne way back in 2004. From her stats, it is clear to see that this is not her favourite surface so her chances have been downplayed despite her World No. 8 status. However, a straight sets win without dropping a service game against Agnieszka Radwanska suggests that has found some level of comfort here this year.

Betting odds and tips

Both players seem to finding their feet in this tournament but something has to give here. When it comes to straight battle on grass, you have to fancy the Spaniard to come out on top but it make take all three sets to get the job done.

You can back Garbine Muguruza to win 2-1 at 11/4 with Bet365.
