Liverpool vs Manchester United - Premier League Preview and Odds

December 16, 2018 16:00pm - Anfield

Premier League

Liverpool can move back to the top of the Premier League table with a win over old foes Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds will be in high spirits having overcome Napoli to make it to the knockout stages of the Champions League, although their ever-growing injury list will be a concern. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are among those ruled out for this clash. However, James Milner should be available after suffering cramp on Tuesday night. Dejan Lovren is expected to step in alongside Virgil van Dijk while Milner could move to right-back.

Jurgen Klopp`s men are still unbeaten in the Premier League this term and have conceded just once at home. Only Manchester City have come away from Anfield with a point. The hosts will need to claim all three points to reclaim their place at the top of the table. Overall, they are unbeaten in 28 league matches on home soil.

Manchester United are already 16 points behind Liverpool and languishing in sixth place in the table. They have won just one of their last five Premier League matches, a 4-1 home win over Fulham last time out, and have only won one of their last five away games.

Jose Mourinho`s men are just three points above 11th-ranked Bournemouth and have a goal difference of just +2 compared to Liverpool`s +28. Financially the club are still performing well but on the pitch, they appear to be going backwards. This will be their sixth season without a Premier League title.

On a more positive note, the Red Devils have not lost a league match at Anfield since 2013 although they were soundly beaten 2-0 in their 2016 Europa League clash. Their last two visits produced 0-0 draws while Mourinho`s men won their last league meeting at Old Trafford back in March.

Betting odds and tips

Liverpool have been in great form and their performance seem to be improving. They can be wasteful in front of goal at times, but create so many chances they inevitably find the net at some point.

They have scored in all but one of their home games this term and won all the games in which they found the net. Manchester United will now doubt set out to frustrate their rivals as they did on their last two visits, but this is a stronger Liverpool side while United have regressed.

Klopp`s men should have the quality to come out on top this time round.
