Premier League preview and odds: Stoke City vs Newcastle United

March 02, 2016 19:45pm - Britannia Stadium

Premier League

Stoke City will try to keep their outside chances of European football alive when they play host to Premier League strugglers Newcastle United at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday night.

Stoke in hunt for top six finish

After a run of three straight 3-0 defeats, Stoke City bounced back with back-to-back league wins against relegation candidates Bournemouth and Aston Villa. They will now go head-to-head with another struggling side as Newcastle United make the trip south to Staffordshire.

The Potters still have an outside chance of grabbing a European place, although they will have to overhaul a five-point deficit to Manchester United to achieve it.

In their last game, they edged to a 2-1 win over bottom club Aston Villa thanks to a brace from Marko Arnautovic. That win lifted Mark Hughes` men into eight place in the table.

Newcastle struggling to escape from bottom three

Newcastle United have spent most of the season in the relegation places and have struggled to find a way out. However, they are currently level on points with 17th-ranked Norwich City and have a vital game in hand. To ensure they make the most of that advantage, they will be looking to take something away from their trip to Stoke.

The signs are not good for Steve McLaren`s men who have lost their last five away games on the trot. On their most recent road trip, they were soundly beaten 5-1 by Chelsea.

Team news

The home side will be without the injured group of Glen Johnson, Ryan Shawcross, Marc Wilson, Charlie Adam, and Geoff Cameron.

Meanwhile, the visitors are without Fabio Coloccini, Chancel Mbemba, Massadio Haidara, Tim Krul, Curtis Good and Gabriel Obertan, while Vurnoin Anita, Aleksander Mitrovic, Cheik Tiote, Paul Dummett and Siem de Jong are all in contention for a return.
