It is oval-shaped and right-handed with sharp turns and one uphill run. Each year the flat racing season begins in April and ends in September.

The history of Beverley Racecourse can be traced back more than 300 years and it is thought that the first racing events occurred in 1690. In 1752, 15 years after the Jockey Club was established, the course’s first grandstand was built at a cost of approximately £1000. From 1813 until 1833, local Squire Richard Watt successfully bred and trained four St. Leger winners: Altisidora (1813), Barefoot (1823), Memnon (1825) and Rockingham (1833).

Beverley racecourse became popular during the 20th century and provided York Racecourse with some competition. Over the years. The venue has undergone many refurbishments in order to continuously provide first-class racing events and offer the best resources. A new stand was opened in the Tattersalls enclosure in 1968 and more recently (2013), the Lavender Lawn was created featuring a driftwood horse sculpture.

The Hilary Needler Trophy Race, which occurs in May each year, is considered to be one of the most important races at the course. . The prestigious event for fillies covers a five-furlong sprint. In the past the race has achieved listed status and today, even though currently unlisted, the event offers a prestigious path towards Royal Ascot.

The racing calendar has gained many important events over the years such as the Brian Yeardley Continental Two-Year-Old Trophy in June and the five-furlong Beverley Bullet Sprint for three-year-olds and above which is held in August. The notable class 5 race called the Rapid Lad Handicap occurs every April and was founded to celebrate the celebrated racehorse named Rapid Lad, who achieved 12 wins at Beverley Racecourse.

Thanks to the track’s sharp right-hand bend with ground veering towards the left, Beverley is renowned for favouring horses drawn in low stall numbers in the shorter races. However, high numbers are more favourable in races over a mile where the going is soft. Malton-based trainer, Richard Fahey has achieved more success than most at Beverley and top jockeys include Neil Callan and Paul Hanagan.
