Mexico City is the capital of the Central American country of Mexico. It is the oldest and biggest city in Mexico. It is a federal district which is divided into 16 boroughs, and is also the seat of the federal government. Its metropolitan population is approximately 21.2 million citizens, and it is the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world. In 1325, the Native Aztecs founded the area which is now Mexico City. During the Spanish conquest of the 1500’s, the city was raised to the ground but managed to endure as a colonial outpost, surviving on trade and eventually regaining its status as a city of importance. In 1821, the Mexican War of Independence led to the formation of the Federal District, which was based on a similar format to that of the U.S. constitution.
