Santo Domingo is located on the banks of the river Ozama, which flows into the Caribbean Sea. It is the capital and biggest city of the Caribbean Nation, the Dominican Republic. The metropolitan population is approximately 2,908 million.

Santo Domingo is in fact the oldest constantly populated European community in all of the Americas as well as the first area to be under Spanish control in the New World. Santo Domingo was founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496. He called the region “La Nueva Isabela” after Queen Isabella I of Spain. The city was later named “Santo Domingo” in honour of Saint Dominic. However, for a short period of time it was called “Ciudad Trujillo.”

Since 1990, the “Zona Colonial” neighbourhood has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The late medieval-style architecture can be observed in the many16th century buildings including churches and stately houses. The Plaza de la Cultura is home to the National Theatre (aka Teatro Nacional) as well as numerous museums. The Centro Olimpico Juan Pablo Duarte sports complex is situated in the middle of the city. Some of Santo Domingo’s best casinos are housed within the first-class resorts found along the coast. Facing the Caribbean is the Renaissance Jaragua Hotel & Casino which is open round the clock and offers 345 gaming machines, 32 games tables including Poker, Roulette, Craps, Mini-Baccarat and Blackjack to name just a few. The property also has four restaurants and 300 hotel rooms.

In the same location, the Melia Santo Domingo Hotel & Casino Diamante is a resort which is open every day and provides 50 games machines and 16 gaming tables. Activities include gambling favourites such as Craps, Roulette and Blackjack amongst many others. There are 245 hotel rooms and a choice of restaurants on site.

Travelling up the coast one will come across the Atlantis World Casino Santo Domingo. There is enough floor space to accommodate 300 gaming machines and 16 games tables featuring Roulette, Blackjack and Baccarat. Customers have a choice of two restaurants and three bars. The hotel has 200 guest rooms. Nearby is El Napolitano Hotel & Casino which is open seven days a week and offers 72 hotel rooms, 15 table games and 40 gaming machines.

The Casino Mirage is located within the San Geronimo Hotel. It has 200 games machines available for play from 11am through until 3am every day, while the hotel provides 73 rooms. Just a short walk away from the central sports complex is the Barcelo Gran Hotel Lina Spa & Casino. It facilitates 65 gaming machines and 16 table games, again, available seven days a week from mid-day until 5am. Also on site are a couple of restaurants, bars, swimming pools and a sumptuous spa. The hotel accommodates 217 guest-rooms.

Located in the business area is the Occidental El Embajador Hotel & Casino, with 50 gaming machines and a dozen table games. The Santo Domingo Princess Hotel offers similar opening times, with 400 gaming machines and 22 games tables. The popular Paradise Plaza Casino attracts business visitors with its 150 games machines, all hosted within the Holiday Inn Santa Domingo to the west on the area.
