Premier League preview and odds: Sunderland vs Manchester City

February 2, 2016 19:45pm - The Stadium of Light

Premier League

Even a win against title favourites Manchester City on Tuesday night, will not be enough to haul Sunderland out of the drop zone - however, it would put them within touching distance of their relegation rivals. Meanwhile, City will be looking to put pressure on leaders Leicester with victory at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland deep in the mire despite good run

A run of four games with just one defeat has done little to ease Sunderland`s relegation worries. The Black Cats remain firmly entrenched in the drop zone, four points adrift of safety.

They come into this game on the back of a 1-1 home draw against Premier League new boys Bournemouth. Prior to that they were soundly beaten away to Tottenham (4-1). That was the same score-line that they succumbed to when they played City at the Etihad earlier this season.

City out to grab top spot

With the back end of the Premier League season fast approaching, Manchester City will be looking to take the initiative in the title race. A win away to Sunderland on Tuesday could lift them to the top of the table depending on how Leicester fare at home to Liverpool.

Manuel Pellegrini`s men are coming into this game on the back of a 2-2 draw away to West Ham United. They are unbeaten in their last five home matches, having won four and drawn one. In their last home game, they secured a comfortable 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Team news

The home side will be without the injured duo of Jack Rodwell and Adam Matthews.

Meanwhile, the visitors will be without Kevin De Bruyne, Eliaquim Mangala, Wilfried Bony, Vincent Kompany and Sami Nasri.

Betting odds and tips

City will be favourites but they have only won one of their last seven away games and it could be another tough night for the visitors. They have conceded in four of their last five games away from the Etihad, while Sunderland have conceded in their last four home games.
