Premier League preview and odds: Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton

May 08 , 2016 13:30pm - White Hart Lane

Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur will be trying to pick themselves up after the Premier League title finally slipped from their grasp on Monday night. This weekend, they play host to a Southampton side who still have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe.

Spurs now fighting for second place

After throwing away a two-goal lead and their last chance of Premier League glory in the process, Tottenham Hotspur must now focus their attention on securing second place in the table ahead of their fierce rivals Arsenal.

Spurs were always playing catch-up in the title race and while Leicester continued to grind out results, the Londoners chances faded with each passing game. Back-to-back draws against West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea finally put an end to their dreams.

With the Gunners just three points back, Mauricio Pochettino will need to lift his players ahead of this game as they look to retain their runner-up status. They come into this game on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run on home soil in the league, having won five and drawn two.

Saints still pushing hard

With European qualification still a mathematical possibility, Southampton are still giving it there all in every game. Ronald Koeman`s men have lost just one of their last eight games and are currently unbeaten in four.

Last time, out the Saints cruised to a 4-2 win at home to Manchester City, and prior to that, they beat Aston Villa by the same score-line away from home. On the road, they have lost just two of their last eight games (at Leicester and Bournemouth).

Team news

Nabil Bentaleb, Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose will all be missing through injury for the home side, while Delle Alli is suspended.

Florin Gardos is the only confirmed absentee for the vistors.

Betting odds and tips

Spurs may have lost a bit of spark after losing out in the title race, while Southampton have hit some good form during the run-in.

The Draw looks like a good bet at 13/5 with Bet365.
