Manchester City vs Liverpool - Champions League Preview and Odds

April 10, 2018 19:45 – Etihad Stadium

Champions League

Manchester City will look to keep their treble hopes alive by pulling off a Champions League comeback at home to Liverpool on Tuesday night.

The memory of last week`s visit to Anfield will still be burning in the minds of the City players. They were absolutely blown away in the first 45 minutes by a Liverpool side who pounced on every loose ball and defensive error. Guardiolas`s men were then unable to break down the home side`s defence in the second half as they went in search of what would have been a valuable away goal.

Their week ended on another sour note, throwing away a two-goal lead at home to their arch rivals Manchester United to lose 2-3 and miss the chance to secure the Premier League title in the process. Their second-half collapse will be a cause for concern for Guardiola as he seeks to shut-out Liverpool for 90 minutes on Tuesday night.

If Liverpool find a goal, the Citizens will need to score five to progress, so keeping a clean sheet will be essential. In addition, they must go in search of a minimum of three goals. Overall, it looks like an uphill task for the team from Manchester.

Liverpool looked somewhat disinterested in last weekend`s goalless Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Several key players were rested and the game did not have that fierce competitive feel that sometimes accompanies these games. A fact that perhaps emphasised the current gulf between the two sides - Everton desperate for a rare derby win, the Reds more concerned about the bigger fish they have to fry.

The Anfield side have lost just one of their last 10 matches, scoring 24 goals in the process. They will be hopeful that key goal getter Mo Salah will be fit again for this encounter. The Egyptian hobbled off in last week`s game but was back in training at the weekend.

The focus here will be grabbing the away goal but it is hard to say whether they will go for it early on or bide their time and wait to strike on the counter attack. Either way, it should be an intriguing contest, the course of which might change with an early City goal.
