Manchester United vs West Ham United - Premier League Preview and Odds

August 13, 2017 16:00pm - Old Trafford

Premier League

Manchester United kicked off their competitive campaign with a 2-1 UEFA Super Cup defeat to reigning Champions League title-holders Real Madrid. Despite the close scoreline, the English side never looked likely to win the tie and in the end it seemed more like an exercise in damage limitation for Jose Mourinho and his men.

The Red Devils will now embark on their Premier League odyssey with an opening day clash against West Ham United. Having spent big once again, more will be expected of United this term. The 20-time former champions have only made the top four once in the last four seasons and have not won the title since 2013. The last time they failed to qualify for the top four prior to Alex Ferguson`s departure at the end of that last title-winning campaign, was way back in 1991.

New signings include Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof. In total, they have spent in excess of £140m. Lukaku bagged the only goal against Real Madrid on Tuesday to add to the three he netted in pre-season. With the right service, the Belgian striker could be in contention for top scorer this term.

Meanwhile, West Ham United will begin their new season full of hope after surviving a difficult first campaign in their new stadium. Aside from the obvious problems attached to uprooting the club from their long-term home, there were issues on the pitch last term that Slaven Bilic has set about fixing during the off-season.

Marko Arnautovic, Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta and Chicarito are the most eye-catching of eight new arrivals who have been recruited for a total outlay of £40m.
