Southampton will look to secure their eighth-ranked status in the Premier League when they welcome a Stoke City side who are winless in four to St. Mary`s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Just one defeat on last five four Saints
With one win, one defeat and three goalless draws in their last five matches, Southampton have somehow found themselves in pole position to finish as the best-of-the rest in the Premier League. The gap between them and seventh-ranked Everton stands at 15 points, effectively splitting the league in two.
Claude Puel`s men were unlucky not to have beaten Manchester United last time out with United keeper Sergio Romero frustrating their lacklustre strike force. That game marked their fourth blank in the last five matches although they were only defeated once in that spell.
Meanwhile, Stoke City have had a season to forget, failing to improve on last year`s showing while managing to avoid a relegation fight. Last time out, they were hammered 4-1 at home by a rampant Arsenal side, a result that ruled out a fourth-straight ninth-placed ranking for the Potters.
Mark Hughes` men are now certain to finish in the bottom half of the table, somewhere between 11th and 16th depending on this weekend`s results. With each place worth millions, the club`s owners will no doubt be hoping for a spirited display this weekend. However, their only victory in the last 10 matches came against relegated side Hull City just over a month ago.รง
