Royal Ascot 2017

Category: Handicap, Class 2

Distance: 1m 3f 211y

Going: Good to firm

Runners: 19

Winner: £ 56,025.00

The King George V Stakes is a handicap race open to three-year-old horses. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs (2,414 metres).

Master Singer could benefit from a wide draw in this one as eight of the last 10 winners have come from stall 10 or higher. He was hardly bothered in his last outing at Newcastle and was marked for a Group 2 race before switching to this. He keeps improving but still has plenty to find here - however, there is a feeling that he is ready to make the jump up in class.

Mark Johnston will be hoping that Sofia`s Rock can land the prize that he claimed in 2012 with Fennell Bay. A 10L win at Leicester in April and an impressive win at Haydock last time out bodes well for this, while his Lingfield Derby Trial run was by no means disgraceful. Whether he can put in another steady run in a large field remains to be seen. The wide draw has not hindered recent winners of this race.

First Nation won on his debut at Wolverhampton but was beaten by Bin Battuta at Doncaster in April. However, he has made significant progress since then and could reverse that outcome here. He looked ready for this when second at Sandown last time out and looks like a good shout for an each-way bet at 16/1.

Betting odds and tips

With all things considered, First Nation looks amazing value at 16/1, while Master Singer also warrants attention at 6/1.
