Sandown Park Racecourse is situated in the outer suburbs of London, in the town of Esher, Surrey. The dual-purpose horse racing venue is home to Flat and National Hunt meetings and features some 29 fixtures throughout the racing calendar. Highlights include the Bet365 Gold Cup, the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes and the Tingle Creek Chase.

Sandown Park Racecourse is regarded as one of England’s finest equestrian racing venues and was favoured by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. At the time of its inauguration in 1875, Sandown Racecourse was unique in being the first purpose-built course as well as the first of its kind to be enclosed. The course was also the first to implement charges to its patrons.

The Eclipse Stakes first took place at Sandown Park in 1886 and offered the winner a cash prize of £10,000, an unusually high amount at the time. A jockey called Tom Cannon claimed victory of the first race, riding a horse called Bendigo. Between 1951 and 1977, the famous jockey, Lester Piggott mastered the race, winning it seven times. Notable horses to have won the Eclipse Stakes include Mill Reef, Mtoto and Halling.

Sandown Park Racecourse has an interesting and colourful history with some of horse racing’s best moments having taken place on its turf. For example, the Whitbread Gold Cup, which was founded in 1957, has provided decades of racing excitement. The famous horse Arkle won the event in 1965, Mill House who claimed victory in 1967 and Desert Orchid triumphed in 1988. Today the race is known as the Bet365 Gold Cup.

In 1972, the property underwent major works, with the grandstand being extended to accommodate 7,600 spectators. By 2002, further improvements had taken place costing some £23 million, including a new grandstand and a new Eclipse Pavilion. As a result, Sandown Park has regularly received the “South East Racecourse of the Year” award.

One of the most anticipated events of Sandown’s Racing calendar is the two-day Bet365 Ultimate Celebration in April. The fixture hosts mixed races such as the Bet365 Gold Cup over jumps and the Bet365 Classic Trail on the flat. No other British race meeting offers a mixed card of this quality. Other prestigious events include the Two-day Coral Eclipse Summer Festival, along with its Ladies Day, and the two-day Tingle Creek Christmas Festival.

The establishment boasts various eateries from fine dining, snack outlets and food halls. There are several restaurant options from a full a-la-carte menu, to seasonal and local food, as well as a fish restaurant. There is also many bars such as Green’s Champagne Bar. There is a wide choice of different hospitality packages on offer and ticket prices vary depending on the event chosen. Sandown Park Racecourse is also home to other forms of entertainment such as a dry-ski slope and an 18-hole golf course. The venue is fully equipped to stage live music events and many famous artists and bands have performed here over the years. The course has ample on-site parking facilities,
